Women's Day Special: Know how a Woman Mayor made Indore the Cleanest City of India

The force behind the stupendous rise of Indore on the Swachh Survekshan rankings is Mayor Malini Gaur. From 180th Rank in 2015 to the number one rank in 2017 among 434 cities. Mayor imposes penalties for littering the city anything between Rs 100 to Rs 1 lakh, collecting spot fines to the tune of Rs 1 crore in the city. The day PM Modi gave a call for Swachh Bharat from Red Fort in 2015, she decided to work on it.

With an integrated solid waste management system IMC has been successful in bringing RSPM lower to 70 Micrograms. The safe threshold is 100 below. About 250 municipal authorities across India visited Indore to learn this successful mantra. Mayor withstood all resistance from political parties, business lobbies and sanitation workers. She had taken conscious decision to keep out private contractors and handed the job entirely by the corporation itself. IMC engaged with various associations like schools, hospitals, temples and hotels to design a sustainable system.

Now Mayor is planning to make compost, at extracting methane gas from the waste to fuel some of the city buses.  Mayor Malini aims at making the district open defecation free (ODF), ensuring dry and wet waste segregation at a door-to-door level. In spite having a budget of Rs 400 Cr. under the Swachh Bharat Mission, Indore’s Mayor able to keep it down to Rs 300 Cr. the idea is to keep the working cost low. Also taking a small pay of Rs 60 from Individual households and Rs 90 from commercial units per month for Clean Indore.
